Rendel Bill Passes First Hurdle In Commons

February 12, 2003 12:00 AM

David Rendel MP's Bill to ban collars that give electric shocks to animals passed its first hurdle in the House of Commons today.

Mr Rendel presented the Bill, which won support from across the House. It has already been endorsed by animal welfare organizations, such as the RSPCA and the National Canine Defence League.

The "Animals (Electric Shock Collars) Bill" would make it illegal for any person to use, manufacture or sell electric shock collars.

Mr Rendel said:

"I am delighted that my Bill has passed its first Parliamentary stage today. Now I hope to persuade the Government that it should receive the time it needs to pass all its remaining stages.

"Electric shock collars cause animals unnecessary pain and distress. I am determined to campaign until we have a complete ban on their use."
