David Rendel MP is sponsoring a new Parliamentary motion designed to give local councils new powers to support local cinemas.
The move follows the decision of Time Out magazine to support two key proposals in Mr Rendel's Cinemas (Rural Areas) Bill - to change planning law so that any change of use involving a cinema building requires planning permission, and to give local councils the ability to provide business rate relief to local cinemas.
The Early Day Motion, tabled today with the support of 7 Liberal Democrat MPs, reiterates these proposals in the hope that they will win all-party and Government backing.
Commenting, Mr Rendel said:
"I am delighted that Time Out magazine has backed our campaign to support local cinemas, which play such an important part in local community life. I hope that as many MPs as possible will sign our Parliamentary motion so that we can put the maximum possible pressure on the Government to do something about it."
