Our economy needs well-trained, highly-skilled employees. So it is important to scrap tuition fees. No one should be deterred by the fear of debt from going to university.
Sadly, the Conservative policy of charging high interest rates on student debt is making potential students even more worried.
To ensure our young people can benefit from a university education, they need a good start in life. So we will spend the Child Trust Fund money on bringing down average class sizes in infant schools from 25 to 20 by recruiting 21,000 extra teachers. We also intend to reduce junior class sizes down to an average of 25.
We will get rid of unnecessary testing, and guarantee that the core subjects of English, mathematics, science, and ICT, are only taught by teachers qualified in the subject.
As Tomlinson proposed, we will combine GCSE, A-Level and vocational courses within a new diploma. Instead of "one size fits all", this would stretch the most gifted and re-engage those who are currently turned off by school.
