Over the last year there has been a sudden collapse in the levels of satisfaction amongst local residents with the way West Berkshire Council runs things.
Each autumn the Council surveys 3,500 households by post. Of these just over half send back their completed survey forms. One of the standard questions asked each year is "Taking everything into account, how satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the way West Berkshire Council runs things?" In 2007 the proportion saying they were either "Very satisfied" or "Satisfied" was 65%, but this fell by 17% to only 48% in 2008.
This is the first time for at least 5 years that the Council's rating has been below 60%.
"This is a devastating blow for Graham Jones's Conservative Administration", commented Councillor David Rendel, the Liberal Democrats' West Berkshire Council Finance spokesperson and Parliamentary spokesperson. "After three years in control of the Council the Conservatives have lost the confidence of the people they were elected to serve".
