A massive fall in the number of vulnerable people, who were being helped by West Berkshire Council with their travel costs, has been uncovered by David Rendel, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate.
"We warned the Conservatives last spring," commented Mr Rendel, "that the withdrawal of the Travel Tokens scheme would leave thousands of elderly and vulnerable people unable to travel to do their shopping or to go to the bank.
"The latest figures show that of nearly 16,000 people who used Tokens last year, as many as 6,000 have not used their right to a Free Bus Pass this year".
For some this may be because they have great difficulty using the buses because of their physical frailty. For others, particularly in the more rural parts of the District, there are simply no useful buses available to them.
"Whatever the reason, the Council is making a massive saving at the expense of some of our most needy residents," added Mr Rendel. "By removing their freedom to travel, the Conservatives have greatly restricted the lives of many pensioners who were hoping to have a few years of happy and fulfilled retirement.
"As usual with the Conservatives, it's a case of 'Take from the poor and give to the rich'. 'Fairness' is simply not a word they understand"
