The Liberal Democrat Shadow Executive has responded to West Berkshire Council's public consultation on the Local Development Framework Core Strategy by opposing the inclusion of the proposed Strategic Site for housing development at Sandleford.
David Rendel, the Liberal Democrat General Election candidate, who is also a member of the Shadow Executive, commented "We accept that the Council must meet its South East Plan housing allocation. However no building at Sandleford is likely to commence before the second half of the Plan period (2016 - 26). This gives us time to explore the potential for locating the housing currently scheduled for Sandleford in mixed employment/housing redevelopments, as at Faraday Plaza, and on brownfield sites, such as Denison Barracks at Hermitage and the Institute for Animal Health at Compton.
"Sandleford is an extremely sensitive location and a proposal for housing development on an adjacent site was rejected by the Inspector who considered our Local Plan 1991-2006. It would be disastrous to make a commitment now to destroy this greenfield site, when there is every likelihood of brownfield land becoming available elsewhere before a decision has to be made".
