West Berks Lib Dems Set Council Short Term Goals5.04.17pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 22nd Oct 2003 More community wardens, a new cinema for Newbury and improved highways maintenance across West Berkshire are three key aims set out in a short term targets document from the Lib Dem Group running West Berkshire Council. The ruling Liberal Democrat group has set out its key priorities for the next two years. As preparations get underway for next years budget they are working with Council Officers to prioritise Liberal Democrat manifesto commitments and seek to identify potential sources for funding these improvements. Already the Lib Dem run Council has worked with others to obtain funding for Community Wardens in Greenham. Real benefits have been seen since the introduction of the Greenham wardens by increasing constructive work with young people. The Council is now looking to widen this scheme to improve the local environment and community safety across West Berkshire. Potholes are being filled quicker as a result of the introduction of the Streetcare one stop shop service for residents to report problems. The Lib Dems are working to ensure an accelerated plan of highway resurfacing across the district. Liberal Democrats have worked closely with local cinema campaigners and local business to open up opportunities for a new cinema for Newbury Town Centre. Council Leader Dr Royce Longton said "Despite unhelpful comments from the Conservatives local Liberal Democrats are doing all we can to get a cinema back into Newbury Town Centre. A new cinema, improved road maintenance and more community wardens are the top priorities for Liberal Democrats on West Berkshire Council."
