RENDEL TO INTRODUCE BILL TO SUPPORT CINEMAS IN RURAL AREAS

12.38.03pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 25th May 2004

David Rendel MP is to introduce a Bill to support cinemas in rural areas.

This follows a consultation on Mr Rendel's website. 83% of those voting in a poll on www.davidrendel.org.uk supported the idea of a Bill to support cinemas in rural areas. 17% backed the alternative proposal, a bill to ban smoking in public places.

Mr Rendel will introduce his Bill on Wednesday 23 June. He will have 10 minutes to put his case to MPs and win their backing to take the Bill forward.

Mr Rendel said:

"Cinemas often struggle to survive in rural areas and small towns. My Bill will look at ways to promote and support them so that local people are not denied access to films on the big screen.

"I am delighted to take forward this issue, which has such overwhelming backing from local people."

ENDS.
