QUEEN'S SPEECH ABOUT THE POLITICS OF FEAR, NOT HOPE12.38.38pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 23rd Nov 2004 Commenting on today's Queen's Speech, David Rendel MP said: "This is another lost opportunity for the Government. "They could have proposed legislation to fund extra police numbers, to introduce free personal care for the elderly, and to scrap those two banes of 21st century life - tuition fees and the Council Tax. "But instead of the politics of hope, Labour offers the politics of fear. Their plans for identity cards are hugely expensive, will be ineffective in fighting terrorism, and threaten civil liberties. "I welcome the Prime Minister's commitment to peace between Israel and the Palestinians. But his policies towards Iraq have widened the gap between the West and the Muslim world. "One measure I welcome wholeheartedly is the promised Animal Welfare Bill. Comprehensive legislation to defend animal welfare is long overdue." ENDS.
