5.48.43pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 11th Apr 2005

David Rendel, Liberal Democrat Candidate for Newbury, is backing the "Make Poverty History" campaign.

As the local MP, Mr Rendel backed a Parliamentary Motion calling for "trade justice, dropping the debt and providing more and better aid".

10-16 April has been designated as a "global week of action" for trade justice.

Commenting, he said:

"I am committed to boosting UK aid spending up to the UN target of 0.7% of national income, and writing off 100% of the unsustainable debt of the world's poorest countries.

"We also need to break down the barriers that prevent poor countries from selling their goods to wealthy countries on fair terms.

"As one of the wealthiest countries in the world, we have a moral responsibility to do our bit to make poverty history."
