MARK OATEN AT DAVID'S ADOPTION MEETING

9.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 14th Apr 2005

Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Home Affairs, Mark Oaten, was in Newbury last night to speak at the meeting set up to adopt David Rendel as the Liberal Democrat Candidate for the Newbury Constituency.

Mark Oaten said:

"Liberal Democrats are committed to recruiting 10,000 extra police officers so that local communities in West Berkshire and elsewhere can be sure of a much greater police presence on their streets.

"I know that David Rendel has an excellent record of working positively with the police and campaigning for investment in CCTV and street wardens in West Berkshire.

"This is in stark contrast to the Conservatives who cut local police numbers when they were in office and have been accused of using misleading and unethical campaigning tactics by the Chief Constable."

The meeting was held at the Kennet School in Thatcham. David was unanimously adopted as the Liberal Democrat candidate by local party members.
